Brief moment of Glory

Posted by Sari

It began. And with an excellent match too. Not even Jukka wearing his silly Brazil hat to the sports bar and nattering on and on and on about the excellence of seleçao could ruin the atmosphere ;-) The goals scored by Lahm and Frings were both outstanding and the game itself was entertaining. What has Klinsmann done to my dear steadily and boringly grinding Germany? Four goals! And the defence leaking like a sieve...

As far as my moment of glory goes, for this brief moment I rank as 642 of the over 400 000 people playing the official fantasy game.

It's Out

Civilization IV
is out. Which mean I'll be needing this pretty soon. After I have succumbed to the temptation and bought the game, that is. Maybe I am lucky and it requires too much memory to run on my computer.

Pelitaloudesta

Posted by Sari

Sari's Addiction

posted by Sari

I have always suspected I have an addictive personality and now it has been proved. No, it is not drugs or alcohol or shopping or even books (well, maybe books), but the final awful realisation was the fault of bi-annual sale at my department store (yes mine, because I own enough of stock to maybe own one half of a step on one of the escalators, though that is probably too optimistic). See, they had Civilization II on sale.  As my computer seems always to be two or three generations slower than what current games demand, I have never really gotten into games before.  Except for Myst.

Anyway, Civ II was on sale, I bought it and now I have asked Jukka to hide it from me. I could have gone on playing it forever. Scary.

The Quiz to end all Quizes

Posted by Sari

Up until about four or five years ago I thought I was pretty good with all sorts of general knowledge quizes. The net and Playstation versions of Millionaire are quite doable and the only person I have lost in boardless Trivial Pursuit (both the Whiskey and dry version) is Jukka. Then I discovered the infamous King William's College quiz. It is a general knowledge test given to the pupils of the King William's College on the Isle of Man. It used to be a real test, but now it is just given out as something fun to do on your Christmas holiday.

The questions are obscure to the point of impossibility and, but they are so enticing that you get a terrible urge to spend your days googling for the stories behind them. I mean would you not want to know "Which pioneer combined a surgical approach to Schizophrenia with Portuguese diplomacy?" or" in 1903, who was the sublime paralytic who died of Cholera?"

Apparently the average number of correct answers is 2. Out of 180. Next year this venerable practice celebrates its 100 birthday and is bound to be even more obscure than usual, so to start practicing early:
Here is this year's quiz and here are the answers.

There usually is a theme in each set of ten questions, and if you get the theme, it might make it easier to guess other answers. I made my record this time 26 correct answers. It helped there was one easyish group of questions. Go me :-)
