For the past few days I've been mostly watching ice-hockey, since the World Cup is going on. Against all odds (and decent performance) Finland is among the final four. (I think that should be Final Four.) We played stupefyingly good hockey against the Ceska Republika, cruised (un)comfortably past Hermanns and fought a strong defensive victory (read: a tie, 4-4) with Svenssons, which was plenty enough for the win of the European Preliminary Round. Which meant that in the quarter-finals we faced the Germans again, and almost managed to blew it with some really lack-luster performance, eventually managing to win by one goal (2-1).
So now our team is thru to semi's, where it'll meet team USA, while the other European qualifier Czech Rep. will meet the most impressive Canada. I'm vaguely optimistic. If our boys are able to come up with a decent effort, more like the game they played against both Czechs and Sweden (for the first two periods), I wouldn't be too surprised to see us cruising for the finals. But it's going to be very hard match that one. At least I hope so.
And I'm not even going to mention anything about case Niinimaa (ups... I did it anyway).
I managed to catch few movies during the week too. Equilibrium (or Cubic as it apparently means in Finnish...) was half-decent Matrix-meets-Fahrenheit 451 -combo. Looked real nice, had a bunch of good actors (Sean Bean, Christian Bale, Emily Watson) portraying OK characters, but ultimately it felt a bit silly. 24-Hour Party People on the other hand was very good, funny and with a decent soundtrack (could've had less Happy Mondays, but then again, when was the last time ANYONE heard A Certain Ratio?). Whats' his name ("I'm Alan Partridge, knowing me, knowing you") was excellent. Steve Coogan?
And yes Mike, I'm back from Norway. I did leave some nubile Norwegian Trekkers for both you and Antti_O.
As a matter of fact, I met (the future Turku city council member) M. Pohjola yesterday (along with some other luminaries and XY-members) at the Autumn openings of the WSOY. I must say the "pitopöytä" (buffet?) was the best I've seen (or actually eaten) ever before. Apparently it came from Tony's Deli and was worth every cent WSOY put into it. I might actually kill some-one for a small portion of that olivebread right now.
Interlude in Finnish
Oletko sinä seurannut Rauta-aikaa televisiosta? Nostin eilen asian esille kun paikalla oli kulttuurillisesti huomattavasti moni-ottelevampia edustajia läsnä ja mikäli nyt oikein ymmärsin, suomalaisen teatterielämän kuolema johtuu juuri tästä pateettisesta öky-produktiosta, joka kokosi aikanaan aivan kaikki (TM by Jaakko Kankaanpää) Suomen Parhaat (ennen tv-ohjelmaa ja Tapio Liinojaa) patsastelemaan ja tuijottamaan kaukaisuuteen hassuhkoissa lavasteissa. Minä olen jollain perverssillä nautinnolla seurannut tätä yletöntä rahan ja taiteellisen talentin hukkaamista, nauraen itseni kipeäksi siinä samalla.
Mikä tässä produktiossa eroaa tuhannen liiran barbaari-elokuvista?
Tiistaina tulleen kakkos-osan jubel-kohtaukset olivat aivan yhtä hassuja kuin jokaisessa näkemässäni barbaari-elokuvassa. Vesa-Matti Loiri (inspiroituneen hyvä idea Ilmari[se]ksi) koputtelemassa kalliota, Jomppa Ojaharjun ja Mikko Niskasen kyylätessä tämän takana, hermostuneesti virnistellen ja koikkelehtien. Tom Wentzel heilumassa keihäitten kanssa. Ja se dialogi? Tämänkö takia Paavo Haavikko on suuri kirjailija?
Interlude over
Anyway, I had good time yesterday, thank you again Mikael!
(One of these days I'm going to start talking about the idea of organising a Finnish sf-con with a fee.)
